Helping you maintain optimal oral health at every age.

Types of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

Oral and maxillofacial surgery includes any procedure which involves cutting into or removing tissue from the mouth or facial region. Oral surgery may need to be performed for a variety of reasons, including for restorative or cosmetic purposes, after an injury or trauma to the mouth or face, or as a part of oral cancer treatment. Depending on your specific diagnosis and treatment plan, an oral surgeon may need to treat the hard or soft tissue of the mouth, jaw, and face.

Oral surgeons are highly trained dental specialists with additional years of training and experience beyond dental school. They have extensive knowledge of the structures of the mouth, jaw, and face.

Types of oral surgery can include:

  • Tooth extractions
  • Dental implants
  • Bone grafting
  • Gum grafting
  • Removal of impacted teeth (including wisdom teeth)
  • Pre-prosthetic surgery
  • Treatment for cysts and tumours

What to Expect

Providing ideal treatment plans for our patients is our top priority. It’s important for you to fully understand your treatment options, the procedures, and information about how to prepare for and recover after your procedure. We encourage you to ask our oral surgery team any questions you have about procedures or treatment options.

Depending on your treatment plan, health, and specific circumstances, your oral surgeon may provide IV sedation or local or general anesthesia before or during a procedure. All these details will be discussed in the initial consultation, and again before your procedure begins.
